Houghton staff also maintain a record of bibliographical citations of works that discuss Houghton's early manuscripts. For a few examples of recent acquisitions to the collections, consult the following search via HOLLIS, Harvard Library’s online catalog: this search query yields early manuscripts whose records were added within the past three months. The Early Books and Manuscripts department maintains an active collection development program, following Houghton’s collections strategy. Dennis, “Collecting early manuscripts at Harvard”, Harvard Library Bulletin XXXI (3), summer 1983: 285-298. In the 20th century, the bequests of two prominent manuscripts collectors enriched Houghton’s early collections further: William King Richardson (Class of 1880) bequeathed about 50 early manuscripts, and Philip Hofer (Class of 1921) donated hundreds.įor more information about the history of manuscript collections development at Harvard, see Rodney G. When Houghton Library opened in 1942, such early and rare materials were transferred from Widener’s Treasure Room. Finally, the 1899 purchase of the Riant collection included over 50 early (pre-1600) manuscripts. In 1896, Harvard Library purchased its first ever manuscripts from the auction of Sir Thomas Phillipps’ immense library Harvard won six classical texts at this auction. In 1874, Charles Eliot Sumner bequeathed 26 early manuscripts. The late 19th century saw three major acquisitions. Harvard acquired these first manuscripts in 1819, when Edward Everett (later President of Harvard, 1846-49) presented to the library six Greek manuscripts acquired in Constantinople and one Latin manuscript from Florence. Collection historyĪlthough Harvard Library’s collections date back hundreds of years, it was not until the 19th century that the first medieval manuscripts entered the collection. Note that early manuscripts exist at other Harvard repositories, including Harvard Law School Library's Historical & Special Collections, Harvard Yenching Library's Special Collections (East Asian materials), and Countway Library (history of medicine), among others. Of note are about 165 Islamicate manuscripts in Arabic, Ottoman Turkish, or Persian dozens of Syriac manuscripts the Riant collection that focuses on the Crusades and Near East and manuscripts in Hebrew, Sanskrit, Church Slavic, Armenian, and Coptic. Among European vernacular languages, Italian, English, French, German, and Spanish are the most represented.Īlthough collection development has centered on Western Europe, Houghton’s holdings are broad enough that they can facilitate study beyond Christian Europe. Over half of the manuscripts are in Latin. The collection is particularly strong in holdings of Italian manuscripts from the High Middle Ages through the Renaissance, as well as manuscripts produced in France and Germany. From cuttings of illuminated manuscript borders to massive choir books, from a late antique Bible fragment to early modern inventories: Houghton Library’s early (pre-1600) manuscript collections offer a window into medieval and Renaissance Europe.Īssembled through gifts and purchases over the past two centuries, Houghton’s wide-ranging collections of over 1500 codices, rolls, and fragments enable research into the literature, art, history, music, philosophy, and theology of Western Europe.

When I was growing up there were so few examples of what a strong, successful black woman could look like, much less a black woman poet-how could we, the unseen and unconsidered, find a place of our own not just to exist, but to thrive?įor all of us, black women born in Babylon, with our meager inheritance of oppression and the diminishment of our selfhood and a world that turns its back to say, “You are not enough as you are”-for a black woman to stand in exaltation of herself is radical, is necessary. And here Lucille Clifton shows us that both joy and self-love radiating from a black woman is also a kind of defiance. Against a world that has marked us invisible and unworthy, black joy is important. I have carried this sonnet-both an ode to the self and also an act of resistance-inside me like gospel, like armor. What a balm and a blessing this poem has been to me. We stand in the June of our lives and try to sing it all the way through each season, always ending each line on the word that brings us together as much as it pivots us into new revelations: We. One waiting around the bend of each American corner. One for every day of the week, one for each of our deadly sins. Like ourselves when we look in the blurry mid-morning mirror. Like our cousins nodded off into prison terms or hyped into the ground. Know them like our neighbor's boy gone bloodied to bullets. Anyplace where sin gets hymned out-straitlaced into storefront chapels on Sunday mornings-but sewn back into Saturday night doo-wopped breakbeats, finger-snapped shuffles of promise. Someplace where the rhyme is always as good as the reason, anyplace where the cost of gin is precious enough to thin but solemn enough to pour on the sidewalk for the departed, anyplace where the schools are overcrowded and underfunded and black and brown enough to not really miss the Seven, who were underperforming on the standardized tests and had been diagnosed as ADD or BDD status anyway. Them lounging streetcornerwise in our consciousness under some flickered neon of mannish-boy dream. "We Real Cool" is the poem so many of us know from grade school: the Seven (that sacred number of the seeker, the thinker, the mysterious) at the Golden Shovel (the shovel be golden but be ready to dig your grave). Grey-joy, another stray yet friendly grey tabby cat, who grew up in my backyard, once got bitten by a bully cat, and a piece of coat came off from his skin. However, Fruity would also not capitulate its space or food to a bully cat from the same neighborhood. He wouldn’t poke his nose in other cats’ business. Even if you are not a cat person, you may want to get yourself an orange tabby cat after reading the following fascinating facts about these adorable creatures. It is hard to resist an orange tabby cat. I took it upon myself to partly parent Fruity. Fruity would head butt against my legs and sit beside me. Fruity, a well-nourished and home-groomed cat, turned into a semi-stray cat and had to depart from his comfort zone to search for food like any other stray cat. The owner of the cat had passed away a few months ago. He would meow for food while I exercised. An orange tabby cat from the house next door, whom my daughter later named “Fruity,” started swinging by our place almost daily. As suggested by healthcare providers, working at home became my daily routine during the first wave of the pandemic. In 2020, the spread of COVID-19 hobbled all activities, be it work or school. I can also vouch for the affectionate nature of orange tabbies from my personal experience with them. While that is right to some extent, orange tabby cats are known for their affectionate nature. Given that orange tabby cat is not a breed, one may think that they don’t have any common personality traits. They have a capital M marking on their heads. All of the orange cat breeds that you see roaming around are orange tabby cats. It is the production of pheomelanin pigment that imparts an orange color to ginger tabby cats. The orange tabby cat is not a distinctive cat breed but rather a coat color pattern. Is it their bright-colored coat or their warm personality? Or is it their lackadaisical nature and their warm snuggles and cuddles? What is an Orange Tabby Cat? Perhaps, these marmalade-colored cats have won your heart, and now you are curious to know what makes an orange tabby cat so charming. From Milo, the lead character of The Adventures of Milo and Otis, to Garfield, an American comic strip, Orange tabby cats have been fascinating feline lovers for decades. There were two experiments that were used in order to determine the Planck constant and can be provided as follows: This is the value for energy of a single photon, and for ‘k’ no of photons, it would be:Įxperiments Used to determine Planck's Constant: Packets are units of energy and they are called Quanta in general terms whereas Photons is a term used for packets in terms of visible light. These particles are the ones that carry the energy and this energy that has been carried is determined by Planck’s Constant. However, after a long research Max Planck came to the conclusion that the energy is not continuous in nature it is instead discrete and in small packets which are indicated by the small invisible particles called photons. The energy was initially considered to be continuous. The ability to add or remove categories, set spending limits, and customize reports can greatly enhance your budgeting experience.ģ. I sent an email to SAi, and I will copy this post to my tech support team at Advantage sign supply, but I also wish I could resolve it tonight, so I'm posting on the off chance that it is a simple matter & that someone here has been through it & can give me advice. The mesh AES key for the EnRoutes wlan1 access point is set with. miles for oceanic and enroute, 1.0 nm for terminal, and 0.3 nm for non. There was some other complicated files I was walked through copying from the old computer & installing to the new computer, so I don't want to re-install the program, but i don't know how or where i can enter the passwords. Instead, I said ok, and the program closed & will not reopen. I assumed I would say "OK" to that box, and then be taken to a screen to enter my password. Today a dialog box popped up in Enroute saying key timeout. instead, I just filed the passwords away and did nothing. I guess it would have been smart to just set aside some time to learn what steps needed to be taken to enter those passwords & get out from under the 40 hour clock (40 hours of the program running) but I didn't do that. I was sent some passwords after they received the old key. In my case, things went smooth & after a few weeks of using the new system I was ready to return the old key. I upgraded from Enroute 3 to 4 & was also needing to have compatibility with a 64 bit OS, so they told me there was a different key (dongle) that I would be upgrading to as well, for 64bit compatibility.Īnyway, there is a 40 hour limit to the initial installation of the program, because this allows me to use the old key on the old computer to get jobs out if the installation doesn't go smooth & there ends up being migration issues to work out. In Germany, agents were not allowed to work for a percentage of a person's earnings, so they referred to themselves as secretaries. For the most part, models were responsible for their own billing. Throughout Europe, secretarial services acted as models' agents charging them weekly rates for their messages and bookings. In the 1960s, the modelling world established modelling agencies. The 1960s and the beginning of the industry Models on runway at a fashion show In 1946, Ford Models was established by Eileen and Gerard Ford in New York, making it one of the oldest model agencies in the world. Wilhelmina Cooper's measurements were 38"-24"-36" whereas Chanel Iman's measurements are 32"-23"-33". However, these models were unknown outside the fashion community. Dorothea Church was among the first black models in the industry to gain recognition in Paris. One of the most popular models during the 1940s was Jinx Falkenburg, who was paid $25 per hour, a large sum at the time through the 1950s, Wilhelmina Cooper, Jean Patchett, Dovima, Dorian Leigh, Suzy Parker, Evelyn Tripp and Carmen Dell'Orefice also dominated fashion. During the 1940s and 1950s, Graziani was the most photographed woman in France and the undisputed queen of couture, while Fonssagrives appeared on over 200 Vogue covers her name recognition led to the importance of Vogue in shaping the careers of fashion models. Models remained fairly anonymous, and relatively poorly paid, until the late 1940s, when the world's first three supermodels, Barbara Goalen, Bettina Graziani and Lisa Fonssagrives began commanding very large sums. The modeling profession expanded to photo modeling with the development of fashion photography. There were no standard physical measurement requirements for a model, and most designers would use women of varying sizes to demonstrate variety in their designs. Eventually, this became common practice for Parisian fashion houses. The term " house model" was coined to describe this type of work. Modelling as a profession was first established in 1853 by Charles Frederick Worth, the "father of haute couture", when he asked his wife, Marie Vernet Worth, to model the clothes he designed.
